Give the Gift of Opportunity to People in Masiphumelele

Masicorp- women wearing a handmade dress that she sewed

Dunyiswua (32) is just one of many women living in Masiphumelele who struggle each day to feed and support their families.

With no skills or qualifications, finding employment has been a challenge for Dunyiswua. She was even forced to send her baby boy to live with her mother because she had no source of income to look after him. It broke her to do this, but she had no other choice. The arrival of COVID-19 added to Dunyiswua’s challenges. Many businesses closed their doors, and finding employment seemed impossible.

Desperate to upskill herself, Dunyiswua enrolled in the Evangeline life skills course earlier this year, where she learnt basic computer skills, English language skills and sewing skills over a period of 6 months, at no cost. She was also awarded with her own domestic sewing machine and a certificate of achievement after completing the course.

The aim of this course is to give people like Dunyiswua the confidence and skills to change their lives and create opportunity where there was once no hope.

“I am very happy and excited about learning to sew. I think this is exactly what I want to do with my life. I can’t believe that I have done this - I never thought I had it in me to sew a dress from scratch - and now look at me, I am wearing an entire outfit that I made on my own.”

Dunyiswua is so inspired by what she has learnt that she now wants to start a sewing business from home so that she can earn a living and take care of her son. The course has given her the tools to do exactly that. Her newfound confidence and determination will help her to become the entrepreneur she dreams of being, while giving back to the community in which she lives.

“I have potential, I know that I do, if I keep pushing myself and with the right guidance, I know I will do great things.”
