Empowering Women of Masiphumelele with Life-Changing Skills

As we approach the end of another impactful year, we want to shine a light on the inspiring work of our Life Skills Development Programme in partnership with Evangeline Ministries. This programme offers hope and opportunity for disadvantaged women in the township of Masiphumelele, Cape Town, equipping them with essential skills and confidence to change their lives.

Through hands-on sewing training, mentorship, and personal support, our Life Skills Programme helps dozens of women each year gain tools for meaningful work and independence. These women learn how to improve their lives and support their families and communities.

Last December, 19-year-old Lubaka Dube graduated from our Life Skills programme. After finishing high school she was unable to afford further education. “I didn’t know how to use a computer,” she says, “or even how to thread a sewing machine, and I spoke broken English. The teachers helped me sew, and use a computer” Even before she graduated as the top sewing student, she already had customers waiting for her skills.

Today, Lubaka is thriving. She works full-time at a prestigious African-themed shop in Simons Town, Cape Town, which draws shoppers from all over the world. At her job interview, she presented samples of her class projects and was hired on the spot. “I love it,” she says. “I enjoy meeting people from all over the world—this is my dream job. Coming to Evangeline was the best thing to happen to me.” Recently, one of her customers was so impressed that they donated four used sewing machines to her.

Lubaka has set up a sewing room in her home to handle the surge of private orders while working at the shop, just in time for Cape Town’s bustling tourist season.

Your support can help more young women like Lubaka thrive. By sending a gift of support, you will be helping to provide the tools, resources, and training needed to empower them to break the cycle of poverty.

Let’s support the women of Masiphumelele together!
